Lady Gaga’s Car Part Dress: When Fashion Meets Auto Design

Lady Gaga, known for her bold and avant-garde fashion choices, once again turned heads at the world premiere of her concert film, Gaga Chromatica Ball. Staying true to her reputation for pushing style boundaries, Gaga arrived in an ensemble that was both striking and unexpected, echoing the innovative spirit of her 2020 album, Chromatica. This time, her outfit wasn’t just a fashion statement; it incorporated elements that seemed to be directly inspired by the automotive world, specifically, car parts.

Mother Monster graced the red carpet in a white, floor-length, one-shoulder dress. However, the dress was merely the canvas for the truly eye-catching element: an armor-like structure worn over it. This piece, crafted from what appeared to be car parts and steel bars, immediately drew comparisons to a Transformers character undergoing a transformation. The brutalist and almost cyber-industrial design felt more akin to something you might find in a John Chamberlain art exhibition, known for sculptures made from crushed car parts, than on a celebrity red carpet. Yet, this unexpected juxtaposition is precisely what defines classic Gaga style.

This unique ensemble was the creation of Berlin-based Argentinian designer Selva Huygens, from his label Selva, and styled by Nicola Formichetti. The all-white outfit is part of Huygens’ [BFAM] (Brutalist Functional Art Movement) series, highlighting a design philosophy that embraces raw, industrial aesthetics.

Adding to the dramatic height and avant-garde silhouette, Gaga sported a pair of towering white platform heels. Her beauty look was equally striking, featuring bleached eyebrows and sharp, black microbangs, completing the overall innovative and edgy appearance.

When questioned about her outfit on the red carpet, Lady Gaga offered a characteristically playful and slightly enigmatic explanation. “On the red carpet I told them it was a car part. They said what kind and I said I don’t know, I’m not a mechanic,” she shared on Instagram. This humorous response underscores the artistic and intentionally ambiguous nature of her fashion choice, leaving interpretation open to the viewer.

Lady Gaga’s “car part” dress is a testament to her fearless approach to fashion and her ability to blend high art with unexpected, everyday materials. It’s a reminder that inspiration can be found anywhere, even in the most unconventional of places, like an auto repair shop. This look solidifies her status as a true fashion innovator, unafraid to challenge norms and spark conversations with her sartorial choices.
