Our 3 Main Surgical Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit offers a dynamic and supportive environment where you will work alongside experienced healthcare professionals. This 38-bed unit specializes in post-operative care, particularly for thoracic surgery patients, and serves as Shadyside’s surgical stepdown unit. You will be exposed to high-acuity cases, ranging from minimally invasive esophagectomies to complex lobe resections, providing you with invaluable experience. Furthermore, our unit provides cardiac expertise, managing interventional cardiac cases from both cath and electrophysiology labs, broadening your skill set and knowledge base in a critical area of patient care.

What You’ll Do as a Part-Time Patient Care Technician

As a Part-Time Patient Care Technician at UPMC Shadyside, you will play a crucial role in delivering routine patient care and supporting the efficient operation of our department. Under the guidance of nurses and physicians, you will contribute directly to maintaining the highest standards of patient care. Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, including assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transportation, toileting, ambulation, and repositioning. You will also be responsible for monitoring and recording vital signs, performing simple dressing changes, conducting EKGs, performing bladder scans, and collecting various specimens. Your proactive involvement in these essential tasks will directly enhance patient comfort and contribute to the smooth functioning of the surgical unit.

Qualifications to Excel as a Patient Care Technician

To thrive in the Part-Time Patient Care Technician role at UPMC Shadyside, candidates should meet the following qualifications. A high school diploma or equivalent is required for both Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician positions. For the Patient Care Technician role specifically, candidates should possess one year of healthcare experience, or have completed at least one clinical rotation as part of a nursing, PT/OT/PA program, or related healthcare training, or hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a health sciences field. While not mandatory, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification is preferred, demonstrating a commitment to patient care excellence. Successful completion of the UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program or the UPMC patient care technician class is also highly valued. All candidates should possess a solid understanding of body mechanics and safe transfer techniques to ensure both patient and personal safety. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for seamless interaction with patients and the healthcare team.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is mandatory, meeting AHA standards including both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 34 clearance is also required.
