Volvo EX60 Electric SUV Teased: A Glimpse into the Future of Volvo’s Design and SPA3 Platform

Volvo has offered a sneak peek at its upcoming EX60 crossover, the all-electric counterpart to the popular XC60, during the recent unveiling of the ES90 sedan. While the full reveal is anticipated next year, this teaser provides valuable insights into Volvo’s future design direction and the introduction of the new SPA3 platform.

For those who tuned into the livestream from Stockholm, a brief yet intriguing glimpse of the Volvo Ex60 emerged. Around the 25-minute mark of the ES90 reveal video, a partially concealed clay model was shown, quickly revealing and then concealing the rear end of what is undoubtedly the EX60. This fleeting moment was enough to confirm that the electric SUV will share design cues with the larger EX90.

Although the teaser was brief, key design elements of the Volvo EX60 were discernible. The electric luxury crossover sports angular upper taillights positioned on either side of the rear window, a design element reminiscent of the EX90. These taillights then extend outwards towards the edges of the car at the base of the window, creating a distinctive lighting signature. Further visual details include sculpted rear haunches and a recessed liftgate, complemented by a black rear bumper featuring a horizontal chrome accent.

Volvo remained tight-lipped about specific details of the EX60 during the presentation. However, the company’s 2024 financial presentation offered a crucial piece of information: the first Volvo EX60 test vehicle has already been built and tested. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the EX60 will be built upon the new SPA3 platform. Volvo emphasized that the SPA3 architecture is on track for launch and is engineered to significantly reduce costs.

The SPA3 platform is not just for the Volvo EX60; it’s a scalable architecture designed to underpin all future Volvo models. This strategic move signals Volvo’s commitment to a unified and efficient platform strategy for its upcoming vehicle lineup. While comprehensive specifications for the Volvo EX60 remain under wraps, its foundation on the advanced SPA3 platform suggests it will benefit from the technological advancements and efficiencies inherent in this new architecture.

Given that the Volvo EX60 is built on the brand-new SPA3 platform, it’s still premature to speculate on detailed specifications. However, considering SPA3 is an evolution of the SPA2 platform, it’s plausible that the EX60 will share certain components and technologies with the recently unveiled EX90 and ES90 models. This potential parts sharing could streamline production and offer economies of scale, further contributing to Volvo’s cost reduction goals for the SPA3 platform.

As anticipation builds for the full unveiling of the Volvo EX60, this teaser provides an exciting glimpse into Volvo’s electric future. The EX60, with its EX90-inspired design and cutting-edge SPA3 platform, is poised to be a significant model in Volvo’s transition to an all-electric lineup. Car enthusiasts and potential EV buyers should eagerly await further details and the official launch of the Volvo EX60 in the coming year.
