Toyota Sequoia SUV Wins Top Honor at Texas Truck Rodeo

The all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia Suv has been crowned the “Sport Utility Vehicle of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA). This prestigious award was announced at the annual Texas Truck Rodeo, where automotive journalists gathered to evaluate the latest trucks and SUVs. The Toyota Sequoia SUV, manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) in San Antonio, not only took home the top honor but also excelled in three additional categories: Full-Size SUV, Off-Road SUV, and Best Exterior.

During the rigorous Texas Truck Rodeo event held at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas, members of TAWA put numerous vehicles through their paces on a challenging off-road course. The evaluation process covered key aspects such as interior design, exterior styling, overall value, performance capabilities, and personal appeal to consumers. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia SUV impressed across the board, ultimately earning the coveted “SUV of Texas” title.

Mike Sweers, executive chief engineer at Toyota Motor North America, Research and Development (TMNA R&D), responsible for the Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma, and 4Runner programs, expressed his appreciation for the recognition. “The all-new Toyota Sequoia SUV is designed to offer customers the complete package – ample space, cutting-edge technology, robust power, and impressive efficiency. We are thrilled that TAWA has acknowledged the comprehensive capabilities of the Sequoia,” Sweers stated. He also highlighted the successful launch of the Toyota Tundra, which was named “Truck of Texas” at the 2021 Truck Rodeo, emphasizing the continued success and innovation within Toyota’s truck and SUV lineup.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia SUV is a completely redesigned three-row SUV, aiming to redefine the full-size SUV segment. It boasts a luxurious and comfortable interior, advanced technology features, and remarkable performance delivered by a highly efficient new hybrid powertrain. Staying true to its namesake, the Sequoia tree, this SUV makes a bold statement with its standard i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. This powerful engine produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque, providing a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,520 lbs. This makes the Toyota Sequoia SUV exceptionally capable for both passenger hauling and towing needs.

Understanding the diverse needs of SUV buyers, the Toyota Sequoia SUV is available in five distinct grades: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and the top-of-the-line Capstone luxury grade. Each grade comes equipped with the new Toyota Audio Multimedia system, initially introduced in the Tundra. This system features a large 8-inch or optional 14-inch touchscreen, developed by Toyota Connected North America in Texas. The system offers enhanced user experience through improved sight, touch, and voice activation controls.

For those planning to utilize the Sequoia’s impressive towing capabilities, the Tow Tech Package is available on most grades and standard on TRD Pro and Capstone. This package includes features like Trailer Backup Guide, which assists in maneuvering the SUV while reversing with a trailer, and Straight Path Assist, which provides steering support to maintain the trailer’s intended path during backup maneuvers.

Teia Collier, president of TAWA, praised the 2023 Toyota Sequoia SUV, stating, “Toyota has masterfully reimagined a classic SUV from the ground up. TAWA members recognized this achievement and selected the Sequoia as the 2023 SUV of Texas. We were particularly impressed by the Sequoia’s overall capability, its powerful and efficient new engine, and its striking design, which allowed it to stand out among a very competitive group of vehicles.”
