Key Responsibilities of a Part-Time Patient Care Tech

As a Part-Time Patient Care Technician, you will be an essential member of the healthcare team, directly involved in patient care and unit support. Your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful, contributing to the smooth operation of the 8B Medical/GI Unit and the positive experiences of our young patients. Your duties will include:

  • Direct Patient Care: Providing compassionate assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients.
  • Clinical Support: Performing point-of-care testing such as blood glucose monitoring, recording weights and vital signs, managing intake and output (I&O), and applying/reapplying telemetry monitors.
  • Preventative Care: Implementing measures for Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) and Pressure Injury (PSI) prevention, including the application of TED hose and SCDs.
  • Wound Care & Procedures: Assisting with simple dressings, applying and removing restraints as directed, performing bladder scans, and collecting various specimens.
  • Advanced Skills (Based on Department Needs): Developing proficiency in advanced skills such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKG acquisition, and NG tube clamping and removal (training provided).
  • Communication & Collaboration: Effectively communicating with patients, families, nurses, and other healthcare team members, reporting patient status changes to the RN, and actively participating in unit activities.
  • Unit Support: Contributing to the efficient functioning of the unit by responding to call lights and telephones, distributing meal trays, transporting patients, and completing clerical tasks as needed.
  • Professional Development: Actively seeking feedback, identifying learning needs, participating in self-review, and contributing to department projects and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhering strictly to all hospital policies and procedures, including safety guidelines, patient confidentiality, and accurate documentation in medical records.

Qualifications to Thrive as a Part-Time Patient Care Technician

UPMC Children’s Hospital seeks dedicated and qualified individuals for our Part-Time Patient Care Technician roles. To be considered for this rewarding position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience: Candidates must possess one of the following experience levels:
    • Two (2) years of general healthcare experience and meet the requirements for the Patient Care Technician title.
    • One (1) year of healthcare experience (as defined above) and current enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), or Physician Assistant (PA) program with completion of at least one clinical rotation.
    • One (1) year of healthcare experience (as defined above) and completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
    • Nursing students who have completed one clinical rotation are preferred.
    • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) or Paramedics, or those currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program, are also preferred.
  • Certifications & Training:
    • Successful completion of a patient care technician senior class.
    • Successful completion of basic information system training.
    • Microcomputer experience is preferred.
    • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency are required (training provided).
    • CPR certification from AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration within 30 days of hire, is mandatory.
    • ACLS certification is preferred.
  • Licensure and Clearances: Must possess or be able to obtain the following clearances:
    • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting Clearance with renewal.
    • Act 33 Clearance with renewal.
    • Act 34 Clearance with renewal.
    • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Demonstrated understanding of cultural diversity and professional conduct.
