Charles Francis O’Reilly’s career path firmly placed the family in the automotive world. After attending college in St. Louis, he joined Fred Campbell Auto Supply, a St. Louis-based company, in 1914 as a traveling salesman. This role was pivotal, allowing Charles to develop an intimate understanding of the auto parts business and the expanding market throughout the region, including Springfield, Missouri. By 1924, his frequent travels by train to Springfield and surrounding areas had convinced him of the region’s significant growth potential. Recognizing an opportunity, Charles requested a transfer to Springfield, demonstrating his keen business sense and foresight.
By 1932, Charles Francis O’Reilly had risen to the position of manager at Link Motor Supply in Springfield. His leadership, coupled with the contributions of his son, Charles H. (Chub) O’Reilly, who also joined Link, proved instrumental in establishing Link Motor Supply as the dominant auto parts supplier in the southwest Missouri area. Together, they cultivated a successful business through expertise and strong management.
However, in 1957, a company reorganization plan at Link Motor Supply presented a turning point. The plan included the retirement of the 72-year-old Charles F. O’Reilly and the transfer of C.H.
