Advanced Engineering: Engine, Transmission, and Suspension

The 3.0-liter V6 Biturbo engine is engineered to deliver high power output while maintaining impressive fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The enhanced power figures are achieved through new, larger turbochargers and an increased charge-air pressure of 16 psi. Positioned close to the engine, the twin turbochargers ensure immediate power delivery with minimal lag.

NANOSLIDE® coating on the cylinder liners, a technology derived from Mercedes-Benz’s Formula 1 V6 hybrid turbo engines, minimizes friction and enhances efficiency due to its exceptional toughness and wear resistance. The spray-guided fuel injection system, operating at pressures up to 2900 psi, also contributes to the engine’s optimized performance and efficiency. A red aluminum insert on the engine cover visually distinguishes the AMG powerplant.

The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is specifically tuned to complement the dynamics of the AMG E43. Its multiple downshift capability allows for rapid bursts of acceleration, while the double-declutching function in “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes heightens the driving experience with more engaging gear changes. In these sportier modes, defined ignition intervention enables quicker shifts compared to “Eco” and “Comfort” modes. “Manual” mode offers driver control via steering wheel paddles, holding gears even at engine speed limits.

For superior agility and handling, the AMG AIRMATIC Adaptive Sport Suspension is based on the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension system. It features three modes: “Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport Plus,” allowing a broad spectrum from comfortable cruising to dynamic cornering. The suspension system incorporates a four-link front axle with specialized steering knuckles and optimized components for rigidity. Increased negative camber on both axles enhances lateral dynamics, and the elastokinematics are designed to be more rigid overall, all contributing to improved agility and dynamic response.

4MATIC and DYNAMIC SELECT: Tailoring the Drive

The AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system in the E43 features a rear-biased torque distribution (31:69 front to rear). This setup enhances driving dynamics, provides higher lateral acceleration, and improves traction during acceleration. The integration of permanent four-wheel drive with the 9G-TRONIC transmission utilizes a new concept where the single-stage transfer case is flange-mounted to the 9G-TRONIC as a separate unit, improving efficiency, reducing friction, and lowering weight compared to previous integrated designs.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT offers five transmission modes – “Eco,” “Comfort,” “Sport,” “Sport Plus,” and “Individual” – allowing drivers to customize the E43’s characteristics. These modes adjust engine response, transmission behavior, suspension settings, and steering feel, ranging from efficient and comfortable to aggressively sporty. Independent of the selected mode, engaging “M” mode provides full manual gear control via the steering wheel paddles.

“Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes prioritize driving dynamics with an agile accelerator pedal map, direct responsiveness, and rapid, emotional gear shifts with reduced shift times and double-declutching. An elevated idling speed further enhances off-the-line acceleration. Conversely, “Eco” mode maximizes efficiency using the ECO start/stop function and a gliding function that decouples the engine during coasting to reduce fuel consumption.

The speed-sensitive sports steering features a variable ratio and offers two modes: “Comfort” and “Sport.” “Sport” mode increases steering effort for enhanced feedback and driver connection. A large, internally ventilated compound brake system ensures robust and reliable stopping power.
