The Dodge Charger Hellcat. The name itself conjures images of raw power, roaring engines, and blistering speed. But beyond the horsepower and aggressive styling, there’s another crucial aspect to consider: weight. How much does this modern muscle icon truly tip the scales? We recently put a 2019 Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye Widebody to the test, alongside a 2018 Charger RT Scat Pack 392, using professional-grade race scales to uncover the real numbers. The results might surprise you, and they definitely highlight the heft behind this high-performance machine.
Our measurements, taken on a level surface with Longacre Computor scales, revealed the following:
- 2019 Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye Widebody (Stock): 4,357 lbs
- 2018 Dodge Charger RT Scat Pack 392 (Stock): 4,325 lbs
These figures immediately tell us that both models are substantial vehicles, weighing in at over two tons. It’s important to note the specific configurations of our test cars to understand these weights in context. Neither vehicle was equipped with a sunroof, a feature that can add weight, particularly to the top of the car, impacting the center of gravity. The Redeye Widebody, in a further effort to reduce weight (albeit minimally for street use), was configured with the rear seat delete option and omitted the extra trunk-mounted speakers. However, both cars were otherwise fully loaded with standard and optional features, representing real-world examples as you’d find them on the road or track. We also ensured both interiors and trunks were clear of extraneous items to achieve the most accurate “curb weight” possible.
Fuel level plays a critical role in vehicle weight, especially when precision is needed, such as in racing. Gasoline weighs approximately 7 pounds per gallon. Our Redeye had about 6-7 gallons of fuel (roughly a third of a tank), while the Charger RT Scat Pack was running on fumes with only 2-3 gallons remaining. This fuel difference accounts for a small but measurable variation in the recorded weights.
For those interested in even more granular data, we also recorded corner weights for both vehicles, both with and without a driver, and front-to-rear weight percentages for the Redeye. It’s quite remarkable to consider that these two modern muscle cars alone contribute close to 9,000 lbs to the road. In a humorous comparison, our stable of three vintage muscle cars – two heavily modified 1965 Corvettes and a 1967 Camaro – collectively weigh almost exactly the same amount. This starkly illustrates how vehicle weights have evolved over the decades, with modern cars often carrying significantly more mass due to increased safety features, technology, and overall size.
