2024 BMW Z4 M40i Manual Transmission: A Driver’s Delight

BMW has listened to enthusiasts and delivered a significantly enhanced manual transmission in the 2024 BMW Z4 M40i. According to Nick Gerstner, Product Manager of BMW Z4, this transmission was specifically engineered for the new Z4, distinguishing itself from shared components with models like the Toyota Supra. The improvements begin with a shift linkage unique to the Z4, a shorter gear lever, and a completely revamped shifting behavior unlike any other current BMW six-speed manual. This addresses past criticisms from owners of M2, M3, and M4 models who found the shifter feel vague and rubbery, particularly noting the challenging first to second gear shifts with long throws.

The previous generation of BMW manuals, often found in models sharing the ZF 6-speed transmission like the F87/G87 M2, G8x M3/M4, and even the Toyota Supra, were known for their comparable internal components. Any difference in shift feel was often attributed to variations in the gear lever’s isolation and bushings. Toyota, for instance, specifically tuned their manual transmission in the Supra to match the car’s distinct character. BMW took note of this approach, especially in response to customer feedback regarding their own manual transmissions.

However, the narrative shifts dramatically with the 2024 BMW Z4 M40i. The revised six-speed manual is nothing short of fantastic. The shorter shifter provides a more engaging and direct feel, while the shifting action itself is now quicker and more precise, drawing comparisons to the benchmark Porsche transmissions. The transition from first to second gear, a common point of complaint in previous BMW manuals, is now remarkably smooth. The third gear remains generously long, allowing drivers to fully exploit the Z4’s power at high speeds before needing to shift again.

This significantly improved six-speed manual is perfectly paired with the equally acclaimed B58 six-cylinder engine. This combination creates a truly compelling driving experience, offering both performance and driver engagement. The rev-matching feature operates seamlessly, further enhancing the smooth driving dynamics, and can be easily disabled for drivers who prefer full manual control. The 2024 BMW Z4 M40i with its refined manual transmission is set to be a winner for driving purists.
