To earn a spot on this prestigious list, a vehicle must achieve a top Overall Score in its category. This score considers rigorous road tests, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and crucial safety features. Furthermore, all Top Picks must come standard with forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection – vital safety technologies proven to save lives.
A key update this year is the requirement for highway-speed AEB as standard across all trims for Top Picks. Vehicles also receive an additional 2 points to their Overall Score if equipped with an active driver assistance system that includes effective driver monitoring. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is uniquely recognized this year for its advanced driver assist system with driver monitoring, earning these extra points.
Despite high scores, some vehicles like the BMW X5 and Hyundai Tucson were ineligible this year due to the absence of standard highway-speed AEB across all trim levels. Additionally, no large trucks made the Top Picks list this year due to lacking essential safety features on base models or exhibiting below-average reliability.
