U.S. Auto Sales Crown Shift: Toyota RAV4 Claims Best-Selling Vehicle Title

Even in a diverse market brimming with compact SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 has consistently reigned supreme in sales year after year – at least when considering “cars.” However, when the conversation shifts to the best-selling vehicle overall in the United States, the Ford F-150 has long held the undisputed title for decades… until now. According to recent data released by the analytics firm JATO Dynamics, the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2024 is none other than America’s best-selling car once again: the Toyota RAV4.

Within the U.S. automotive market, which saw 16.09 million vehicles registered in 2024, marking a 3% increase from the previous year, the RAV4 achieved an astounding 475,193 sales. This figure represents the model’s most successful year to date. It’s worth noting that the Toyota RAV4 has maintained a consistent sales volume of approximately 400,000 units annually since 2017. To describe its market performance as “selling like hotcakes” would be a significant understatement. This continued success comes even as the current generation model enters its sixth year of production, with anticipation building for a new iteration expected in 2026. The RAV4 not only experienced a year-over-year sales surge exceeding 9%, but this growth propelled it past the Ford F-150, which recorded 460,915 total registrations.

Ford F-Series Remains a Dominant Force in the US Pickup Truck Market

It is important to understand that the sales figure from JATO Dynamics pertains specifically to the Ford F-150 model. This differs from Ford Motor Company’s own sales reporting methodology, which aggregates all F-Series models – ranging from the F-150 to the heavier-duty F-250/350/450 pickups and the medium-duty F-600. When considering Ford’s comprehensive F-Series sales figures, the nameplate maintains its position as America’s best-selling, achieving an impressive 765,649 sales.

Ford clarified the distinction between F-150 and F-Series sales in a statement, highlighting the shared cab architecture across the F-Series range, from F-150 to F-600. They emphasized the variety of powertrain options, including ICE, EV, and hybrid, along with different frames and styling choices available throughout the F-Series lineup to meet diverse customer needs. This approach to offering multiple configurations and powertrains is also seen in other popular models like the Toyota RAV4 and Porsche 911, catering to a wide spectrum of customer preferences and applications.

Top Vehicle Sales: Beyond the Top Two

The Honda CR-V secured the third position in the best-selling vehicles chart with 402,791 sales in 2024. This is a notable accomplishment, as the Honda CR-V demonstrated an even more significant sales increase than the RAV4. The Tesla Model Y led the electric vehicle segment by a considerable margin, ranking fourth overall with 372,613 deliveries, despite a 3% decrease in sales. The Toyota Camry, benefiting from a new generation release, experienced a 7% sales increase, reaching 309,875 units sold. The smaller Toyota Corolla also showed substantial growth, indicating a resurgence in the popularity of compact and affordable cars, with 283,098 sales, a remarkable 22% rise. The Honda Civic also saw a significant sales increase of 21%, although it trailed slightly behind the Corolla with 242,005 sales. The Nissan Rogue emerged as the third best-selling crossover in the U.S. market, with 245,724 sales, despite a 7% decrease compared to 2023.

When applying the same light-duty versus heavy-duty vehicle categorization used by JATO Dynamics to other major automotive brands, trucks continue to dominate the top-selling vehicle rankings. Following the Ford F-150, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 achieved 344,022 sales, although experiencing a 2% decrease. Rounding out the top 10 best-selling vehicles is the GMC Sierra 1500, which saw an 11% sales increase, reaching 216,248 units. Interestingly, the Ram 1500 did not make it into the top 10, ranking thirteenth with 200,006 sales, and experiencing a significant 26% year-over-year sales decline.
