2024 BMW X3 M40i: Owner Review, Road Trip Insights, and Performance Analysis

After several months and a significant 2,200-mile road trip, here are my detailed thoughts on our new 2024 Bmw X3 M40i. As a long-time Bimmerpost reader and BMW enthusiast, upgrading from a 2017 BMW 320i xDrive, the X3 M40i has proven to be an exceptional vehicle, exceeding expectations in many aspects. While considering alternatives like the Lexus RX 350h, BMW X5, and X3 30i, the M40i stood out as the optimal choice, offering the benefits of the 30i with enhanced performance and no discernible downsides beyond the price point. Ultimately, opting for a lease on a demo model with low mileage (3,000km) provided an attractive value proposition.

Configuration Highlights:

  • Exterior Finish: Mineral White Metallic
  • Interior: Mocha Vernasca Leather with Leatherette dashboard and High-gloss Dark Oak trim
  • Package: Premium Essential Package (Comfort Access, Panoramic sunroof, Ambient Lighting, Lumbar Support)
  • Wheels: Staggered 20″ 699M wheels

Key Advantages of the 2024 BMW X3 M40i:

  • Powertrain Excellence: The combination of the B58 engine and ZF transmission is as exceptional as widely acclaimed. In Comfort mode, the powertrain is remarkably smooth and refined, while Sport mode unleashes substantial power. The exhaust note, while perhaps not as aggressive as earlier M40i models, still delivers a satisfying sporty sound.

  • Refinement and Comfort: The 2024 BMW X3 M40i offers a significant leap in refinement compared to older models like our F30 320i. The cabin remains quiet and composed, even at highway speeds of 80-90 mph, contributing to a comfortable and relaxed driving experience, especially on long journeys.

  • Design and Interior Aesthetics: Subjective as design can be, the G01 X3, particularly in M-Sport trim, presents a visually appealing exterior and interior. The M-sport steering wheel is a standout feature, and the driver-centric interior layout with physical controls and ID7 system strikes an excellent balance between modern technology and user-friendly functionality. The Mineral White on Mocha color combination evokes a nostalgic connection to our previous E70 X5 35d, which had a similar, yet distinct, Alpine White on Tobacco interior.

  • Superior Night Driving Performance: The Matrix LED headlights are notably brighter and more effective than both the LEDs on our F30 and the HIDs on our E70. The automatic high-beam assist operates flawlessly, providing optimal visibility in varying night-time driving conditions. Furthermore, the interior light carpet and ambient lighting enhance the premium feel and nighttime ambiance of the cabin.

  • Impressive Fuel Efficiency: The fuel economy of the 2024 BMW X3 M40i significantly surpasses EPA estimates. Over our 2,200-mile road trip, with four adults, luggage, and air conditioning constantly running, we achieved an average of 32.0 mpg (7.35 l/100km). This efficiency was maintained despite primarily highway driving and encountering traffic in urban areas, demonstrating the real-world fuel-sipping capabilities of this performance SUV.

Areas for Potential Improvement in the 2024 BMW X3 M40i:

  • Ride Quality on Uneven Surfaces: While equipped with Adaptive M suspension, the ride quality, though improved over our older E70 X5 and comparable to the F30, could be more plush for a luxury SUV. Road imperfections, particularly in areas with rough roads like around NYC and Philadelphia, were more noticeable than desired. However, body control and overall handling remain excellent, as expected from a BMW.

  • Seat Firmness for Extended Drives: Personal preference plays a role, but the seat bottoms felt somewhat firm after prolonged driving sessions exceeding 2-3 hours, which might be a point of consideration for those planning frequent long-distance travel.

  • Air Conditioning System Efficiency at Idle: The air conditioning system’s reliance on the accessory belt rather than a 48V system results in reduced cooling performance at stop lights. The engine noticeably kicks in more frequently to maintain A/C performance when stationary, which could be refined.

  • ECO PRO Coasting Functionality: The engine-off coasting in ECO PRO mode is appreciated for efficiency, but the engine restart can be hesitant. Often, braking harder or switching to Comfort mode was necessary to re-engage the engine, which feels less seamless than ideal.

  • Tires – Bridgestone Alenza 001: The factory-equipped Bridgestone Alenza 001 tires appear to be a compromise. Their performance is not on par with dedicated summer tires and likely contributes to the less-than-optimal ride quality, suggesting a potential upgrade for enhanced handling and comfort.

Overall, the 2024 BMW X3 M40i is a remarkable vehicle with numerous strengths and only minor drawbacks. The positives significantly outweigh the negatives, making it a highly satisfying choice. Securing one in the final year of the G01 generation, before the G45 redesign, feels particularly rewarding, especially for those who prefer the current interior design.

Exhaust Note Evolution: An interesting observation is that the exhaust note has become more pronounced over time. Subtle burbles have also emerged, which were initially absent when the car was new, adding a touch more character to the driving experience.
