Market-Specific Powertrain Options and a Legacy of Production Excellence
The 2023 BMW 7 Series is engineered to appeal to discerning customer groups in a globalized market. This is reflected in its market-specific powertrain strategy, offering unique configurations for China, BMW’s largest market, and a diesel variant for the European market.
This new generation of BMW luxury sedans introduces a new dimension of spaciousness. Unlike previous iterations, the 2023 7 Series is exclusively available worldwide in a long-wheelbase configuration, maximizing rear passenger space. Its multifaceted character is defined by specific design elements and diverse powertrain options. The 2023 7 Series lineup includes models from BMW i and BMW M, highlighting its broad spectrum of attributes – from elegant, modern, and sustainable to expressive, sporty, and dynamic.
For the first time, the new BMW 7 Series offers a choice of combustion engines, plug-in hybrid systems, and all-electric powertrains. This powertrain diversity is enabled by a newly developed flexible vehicle architecture, a cornerstone of the global model strategy for this new 7 Series generation. This approach allows the BMW Group to cater to individual customer preferences, infrastructure considerations, and regulatory landscapes across key automotive markets worldwide. The European market launch will initially feature the BMW i7 exclusively. In the USA, China, and other select regions, two models equipped with petrol engines and 48V mild-hybrid technology will be offered alongside the all-electric variant at launch.
Plug-in hybrid versions of the new BMW 7 Series are anticipated to roll out in numerous markets starting in early 2023. These will include the first BMW M model with a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and plug-in hybrid drive. A diesel engine variant with 48V mild-hybrid technology will join the European lineup shortly after the initial market launch. Further iterations of the all-electric BMW i7, including the flagship BMW i7 M70 xDrive, are slated for future release.
Continuing a tradition, the 2023 BMW 7 Series will be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. BMW’s largest European production facility, Dingolfing represents a fusion of tradition and future-forward manufacturing, serving as the BMW Group’s center of excellence for electric drive component production. The highly integrated electric drive system and high-voltage battery for the BMW i7 will also be manufactured at this location. Vehicles with combustion engines, plug-in hybrid systems, and all-electric powertrains will share a single production line in Dingolfing. Besides the all-electric BMW iX and the new BMW 7 Series, the BMW 8 Series luxury sports car and BMW 5 Series models are also produced here.
BMW M Performance Enters the Luxury Segment with Electrified 7 Series
The 2023 BMW 7 Series model range will expand to include two BMW M models featuring electrified powertrains. The BMW M760e xDrive, boasting 420 kW/571 hp output and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, will debut in Spring 2023. Its electric motor provides a temporary boost of an additional 30 kW/40 hp for enhanced acceleration. M-specific exterior and interior design cues, including a distinctive exhaust system with unique twin tailpipes, emphasize the performance DNA of this plug-in hybrid BMW M model.
The future flagship, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, will feature a dual-motor all-electric powertrain generating over 600 hp and more than 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque. This most powerful road-legal BMW model will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 4.0 seconds. (Performance figures for the BMW i7 M70 xDrive are estimates based on the current development stage). This model is expected to be available later in 2023, further solidifying the 2023 7 Series as a leader in both luxury and performance.
Elevated Digital Experience with BMW iDrive and Operating System 8

Rear passengers are treated to a unique entertainment experience with the new BMW Theatre Screen – a 31.3-inch panoramic 8K resolution display in 32:9 format that deploys from the roof, transforming the rear compartment into a private cinema. Front passengers can also enjoy YouTube video-on-demand streaming on the control display. A 5G-compatible antenna system ensures high-speed connectivity within the 2023 BMW 7 Series.

A high-security vehicle based on the new BMW 7 Series is under development and will be added to the range in 2023. Featuring a segment-unique integrated protection concept developed from the ground up, this armored variant meets the stringent security demands of authorities, state representatives, and high-profile individuals requiring specialized protection.
The development of this high-security 2023 BMW 7 Series centers on an innovative protection philosophy from the BMW Group. This approach delivers exceptional security standards while maintaining the levels of interior comfort, driving dynamics, and ride quality characteristic of the new BMW 7 Series range.
