Finding Reliable British Car Parts Suppliers: A Restorer’s Perspective

Embarking on a British classic car restoration is a rewarding journey, often filled with passion and dedication. However, sourcing reliable British Car Parts Suppliers can be a critical factor in the success and enjoyment of your project. Based on years of hands-on experience restoring a 1970 MGB, I’ve navigated the landscape of parts suppliers and want to share some insights that could prove invaluable for fellow enthusiasts.

My restoration journey began 11 years ago, a full nut and bolt endeavor aimed at both restoring and subtly modifying my MGB. Now, as I’m putting miles on the freshly assembled drivetrain, awaiting the upholstery work to be completed, and addressing final details, the importance of reliable parts suppliers is clearer than ever. Living in close proximity to the Moss Motors California store initially made them my go-to supplier. Their extensive inventory and generally good parts availability were definite advantages. I was particularly impressed with their technical support. A specific instance involved a spindle and wheel bearing order where the parts simply wouldn’t seat correctly. Upon accurate measurement, it became clear the spindle’s inner diameter was flawed – a manufacturing defect. Contacting Moss Motors, I spoke with Dave, who diligently investigated their stock and confirmed a batch of faulty spindles. He personally sorted through the inventory to find two spindles with correct bearing seating. Visiting their shop to return the defective parts, Dave not only showed me the issue but also pressed the bearings himself, offering to do the second set to demonstrate the correct process. This level of support cemented my loyalty to Moss Motors. Their standard shipping is also remarkably quick for me, often delivering parts to my doorstep within two days.

However, it’s not without its challenges. While Moss Motors’ website indicates part availability, it’s not always reflective of immediate stock at the California location. Parts may sometimes ship from their Virginia facility, adding a week to delivery times. Shipping costs can also be disproportionately high, an issue I’ve raised with senior management, who assured me they are exploring more efficient and cost-effective shipping solutions. Part quality, broadly speaking, isn’t solely a Moss Motors issue. Most suppliers, in reality, source from largely the same manufacturers. In my experience, quality inconsistencies are a wider market issue, not unique to one supplier. It seems the drive to meet marketable price points often compromises part quality and fitment. Perhaps, to some extent, this reflects our collective desire for top-tier quality at the lowest possible prices.

My philosophy leans away from harshly criticizing suppliers. Having worked in a quality-focused role in the aerospace industry, I understand that consistently achieving unquestionable quality is exceptionally difficult, regardless of price. For me, service is the true differentiator. Recently, needing headlight rings and other components unavailable at Moss Motors, I turned to Rimmer Bros in the UK. Their prices appeared competitive, and shipping costs, considering the international distance, seemed reasonable for a two-day air service I opted for. However, after placing and paying for expedited shipping, a week passed without any order updates. My initial email inquiry went unanswered. After two weeks, a more direct email elicited a response citing a delay for a single small part expected in January. Subsequently, I requested order cancellation. The cancellation confirmation then stated they had none of the ordered parts and no estimated delivery timeframe.

The takeaway from my experience is clear: prioritize suppliers who provide excellent support. If you receive good service, reward them with your continued business; they’ve earned it. Conversely, if service is lacking, take your business elsewhere, and importantly, communicate the reasons why. Our classic car hobby relies on the continued support of these british car parts suppliers. Let’s support those who treat us well and demonstrate a commitment to service and customer satisfaction, ensuring the longevity and vibrancy of our passion for British automobiles.

Finally, I want to echo the sentiment of others and recommend Basil Adams as a fantastic resource within the British car community. His knowledge and approachable demeanor make him an invaluable asset for anyone involved in British car restoration.
