Remembering Bob Drake: A Legacy in Ford Car Parts

It is with great sadness that we at cardiagxpert.com acknowledge the passing of Bob Drake from Indiana on March 14, 2021. While many in the automotive world know Bob for his meticulous restoration of the iconic Jack Stewart 1941 Ford in the early 1970s, his influence extends deeply into the realm of classic Ford car parts. For enthusiasts seeking authentic and high-quality components, the name Bob Drake is synonymous with excellence.

Bob Drake wasn’t just a restorer; he was a storyteller and a passionate advocate for preserving automotive history. Those fortunate enough to have met him, or even spoken with him over the phone, recall his kind nature and his eagerness to share anecdotes, particularly about the Jack Stewart Ford. He recounted the journey of finding the car, the dedication poured into its restoration, and the sheer joy he experienced driving it on countless road trips. This passion wasn’t limited to just one car; it permeated his entire approach to classic Ford vehicles and, by extension, the Ford car parts needed to keep them alive.

During a research trip in September 2010, Palle Johansen and I had the privilege of visiting Bob at his home in Fortville, Indiana. His kitchen table wasn’t just for meals; on that day, it became a treasure trove of Jack Stewart Ford history. Bob had meticulously gathered every piece of documentation and memorabilia related to the car, laying it all out for us to explore. A single day felt insufficient to absorb the wealth of knowledge and stories he possessed. His commitment to detail and historical accuracy in his restoration work mirrored his dedication to providing authentic Ford car parts to the wider community.

Years later, in 2013, the Jack Stewart Ford was displayed in bare metal at the Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS). Bob Drake, a pivotal figure in its history, flew out to be part of this special occasion. It was there he met Jack Stewart himself for the first time. To witness these two custodians of the Jack Stewart Ford, sharing their stories against the backdrop of the bare metal masterpiece, was truly a magical experience. Bob’s presence at such events highlighted his continued involvement and influence within the classic car and Ford car parts circles.

So long, Bob. Your dedication to Ford car parts and the classic car community will be deeply missed. We hope you are now cruising in heavenly classics, surrounded by the beautiful automobiles you so passionately cherished. Thank you, Bob, for the stories, the passion, and for being such a remarkable figure in the world of Ford car parts and restoration.
