Finding the right storage for RC car parts can be surprisingly frustrating. Many affordable storage options promise much but deliver little in practice. For a while, drawer-style organizers seemed like a good idea, but the reality was often different. Drawers would jam, becoming impossible to open smoothly with just one hand. Sometimes, they’d stick so badly that you had to yank them open, scattering all the carefully sorted contents inside. The breaking point came during a move when hours of organizing nuts, screws, and washers into a drawer unit ended in disaster. Upon taking it out of the car at the storage facility, the drawers completely fell out, spilling everything onto a gravel surface.
The gravel, unfortunately, was iron-rich, leading to an hour spent on hands and knees with a magnet, retrieving screws and far too much gravel. It was a deeply discouraging experience.
Switching to small, clear parts boxes from a local home goods store proved to be a much better solution. Sorting everything into these boxes works exceptionally well. The option of removable bins would be an added bonus, but these boxes are already a significant improvement. The only minor annoyance with parts boxes is the occasional stray part that doesn’t quite fit into any existing category, making you hesitant to start a whole new box just for one item. In fact, any screws that aren’t standard Tamiya-style or metric stainless steel like those from quality suppliers are immediately discarded. Storing them simply isn’t worth the effort. When dealing with non-Tamiya models that use non-metric screws, the best approach is to replace them all with metric equivalents.
In conclusion, while drawer storage might seem appealing initially, clear parts boxes offer a more reliable and efficient method for keeping your RC car parts organized and accessible. They minimize spills, keep parts visible, and simplify the overall maintenance of your RC hobby.
