1970 Camaro L78 Project Car For Sale: A Rare Opportunity for Restoration Enthusiasts

For serious collectors and restoration aficionados, an exceptional opportunity has arisen to own a genuine piece of American muscle car history. Reluctantly offered for sale is a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro L78 project car, a true gem from the golden era of automotive performance. This is a chance to acquire a very rare and well-documented Camaro, perfect for a dedicated restoration project.

This 1970 Camaro is not just any classic car; it’s an original SS 396 / 375hp model, boasting its born-with CKO engine, M21 transmission, and COX (3:55) rear end. Finished in the sophisticated Green Mist exterior with a Green Vinyl Top and Standard Green Interior, this Camaro presents a striking aesthetic. What sets this project apart is its completeness. The car comes with a treasure trove of hard-to-find original parts, making it an ideal foundation for a concours-level restoration. These components include the big block fan shroud, radiator, dual snorkel air cleaner, shifter with all rods, power booster, exhaust manifolds, and CL wheels. Even the original gauge cluster remains in the car, preserving its authenticity.

The trim tag further verifies the car’s pedigree:

While the body exhibits some signs of age with dings, dents, and light surface rust, it remains remarkably solid. According to a previous owner, the right quarter panel was replaced early in its life due to a minor incident, a testament to its well-preserved state over the decades. This Camaro’s history is meticulously documented, adding significant value and peace of mind for potential buyers. Purchased from the third owner, who is a known acquaintance, the car’s origins trace back to its original sale at John Smith Chevrolet in Atlanta on July 14, 1971. Remarkably, the original sales invoice is included, along with the warranty transfer to the second owner on March 30, 1972, at East Point Chevrolet in East Point, Georgia. This transfer document clearly imprints the Protect-O-Plate, a highly sought-after piece of Chevrolet history.

Currently, the engine and transmission are removed from the car, but the original, born-with engine has been professionally rebuilt to factory specifications (.030 over). A significant portion of the engine components have been expertly restored by renowned specialists Jeff Dotterer, Jerry MacNeish, or Eric Jackson. These restored parts, including the carburetor, water pump, starter, manifolds, distributor, and pulleys, are ready for reassembly.

The third owner, a dedicated enthusiast, acquired this Camaro on December 28, 1988, with the intention of undertaking a full restoration. He amassed a substantial collection of New Old Stock (NOS) parts, which are included in the sale. While some of these NOS parts may prove redundant for the restoration, the collection includes valuable items such as a right quarter panel, left fender, rear panel, trunk lid, and numerous smaller components. A detailed excel spreadsheet itemizing the original and NOS parts accompanies the car, providing a clear inventory of what’s included.

This 1970 Camaro L78 project car represents a straightforward restoration opportunity, thanks to its completeness, originality, and included NOS parts. Given the rarity of only 600 L78 Camaros produced in 1970, and the even fewer numbers retaining their original driveline and documentation, this is a truly exceptional offering.

Asking price is $27,500 or best offer. Serious inquiries are encouraged. Interested parties are invited to send a private message (PM) or email at [email protected] to arrange a discussion or viewing of the car. Additional photographs are available upon request.
