Fleeing the hardships of the Irish potato famine, he established himself in St. Louis, diligently pursuing education and earning a law degree. He built a career as a title examiner. His son, Charles Francis O’Reilly, continued the family’s pursuit of progress. After attending college in St. Louis, he entered the automotive world in 1914, becoming a traveling salesman for Fred Campbell Auto Supply. This era was pivotal for the automotive industry, with cars becoming more accessible and the demand for car parts escalating.
By 1924, Charles F. O’Reilly’s sales territory had familiarized him with Springfield, Missouri. Traveling by train, he observed the region’s potential for growth in the automotive market. Recognizing an opportunity, he requested a transfer to Springfield, a strategic move that would lay the groundwork for the future O’Reilly empire. By 1932, his dedication and acumen led him to the manager position at Link Motor Supply in Springfield. His son, Charles H. (Chub) O’Reilly, joined him, and together, they steered Link Motor Supply to become the leading auto parts provider in the area, showcasing their deep understanding of the automotive needs of the time, including parts for models leading up to and around the significant year of 1957.
1957 marked a turning point. Link Motor Supply’s planned restructuring, which included the retirement of Charles F. O’Reilly and a transfer for C. H. O’Reilly, did not align with their vision. Driven by entrepreneurial spirit and a deep understanding of the 1957 Car Parts market and beyond, they decided to forge their own path. This pivotal year saw the birth of O’Reilly Automotive, Inc.
